Chris Pittard

Chris’s paintings and drawing on both clay and paper are often inspired by familiar landscapes combined with personal narratives. These landscapes are begun and occasionally completed on site in front of the subject with sketches in journals and photos used for information when completing them back in the studio.

‘I usually begin with the most transparent materials such as ink and watercolour sometimes introducing gouache, coloured pastel pencils and conte. Some areas maybe built up with many layers and a range of materials until the subtle nuance of colour is achieved’

Chris completed a Bachelor of Fine Art painting at RMIT in 1980 and later a Graduate Diploma at Victorian College of the Arts 1988. Since the early 90s his practice has included painting drawings and ceramics.

He has regularly exhibited his work in group and solo exhibitions often exhibiting the ceramics and works on paper together.

He has won a number of prizes and is represented in Margaret Lawrence Australian Ceramic Collection Victorian College of the Arts, The Nillumbik and City of Whitehorse Art collections.

He currently divides his time between teaching in the Visual Arts department at Box Hill Institute and a studio practice that includes painting drawing and ceramics from his studio in Eltham.
